Alyssa Velazquez, CMOA’s Curatorial Assistant of Decorative Arts and Design, has joined the worldwide museum challenge with an art recreation from our collection. We present to you her social isolation-inspired take on Joan Brown’s The Room, Part 1.
I spend most of my day in one room; one chair; one position. After 5 p.m., I move from that chair to yet another chair. In my “queen chair,” as I call it, I try to tune out the rest of the world. When that doesn’t work, I put on things that make me happy: jean overalls, red bandanas, or polka dot socks. It seemed only natural then to pick Joan Brown’s The Room, Part 1 to recreate, as the imagery resonated with my pandemic lifestyle. In the process I was reminded that even in our one-room worlds there can still be art.
