Story Sunday: What Will These Hands Make? by Nikki McClure

Tune in to afternoon story time with Alyssa Velazquez, the curator of Locally Sourced, as she reads What Will These Hands Make? by Nikki McClure. Follow one family for a day and discover all of the ways they use their hearts and their hands to make their community a better place. Will these hands make a box to hold memories, a song for a parade, or a quilt that keeps people warm? The questions in this story dare the reader to dream of everything they can be and all that they can do for others.

Art-Making Activity

For this Story Sunday activity, we will be making a string of paper lanterns!

You will need construction paper sheets (at least 3 per person), or any other colorful 8 1/2 x 11 in. sheets. Each sheet will become one of your lanterns. You'll want to have a pair of scissors on hand for cutting all the folds. And if you're sharing this Story Sunday time with a friend, relative, or sibling, you'll want to have more than one pair of scissors for everyone to use. You'll also need one stapler (preferred) or Scotch tape; we'll be using the staples to form and bind the lanterns' shapes and handles. And finally, twine, string or yarn measuring from 20 to 60 in. for hanging up the lantern(s)!

Full List:

  • Construction paper (at least 3 sheets)
