Samba in Braddock
419 Library St, Braddock, PA 15104, USA
The Pittsburgh Samba Group and Timbeleza bring the lively dance and sounds of Brazil to Braddock for a family-friendly, multi-sensory experience! Hélio Oiticica’s Parangolés inspire art making, dancing, and fun!
Hélio Oiticica: To Organize Delirium is the first comprehensive US retrospective of the influential Brazilian artist (1937–1980). Ranging from beautifully balanced geometric paintings to immersive, interactive environments, Oiticica’s work is visually arresting, wholly original, and seeks to build a participatory relationship with audiences.
Parangolés, works in fabric that can be carried or worn, were originally made for the samba dancers in the Mangueira favela. The poetic or political messages that they often carry, buried within their layers of cloth, could be read only when the dancer was in motion.
The exhibition is co-organized by CMOA, The Art Institute of Chicago, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
