Inside Out — Hugo Cruz and Caminos + DJ Shoe

On Saturday, August 14, enjoy an afternoon of contemporary and traditional jazz fusion in the museum's outdoor sculpture courtyard with drummer and percussionist Hugo Cruz who will be joined by bassist Dwayne Dolphin, pianist Max Leake, and saxophonist Roger Romero. In between sets, enjoy the musical stylings by DJ Shoe.

Bring your appetite, too! Regional food trucks and a bar created by Café Carnegie offering custom snacks, kid-friendly treats, local beers, delicious wines, and more will be on-site.

While you’re at Inside Out, participate in art-making activities for all ages.

Inside Out events are FREE, open to all ages, have limited capacity, and are available on a first-come-first-serve basis. Make a day of it and reserve your timed tickets to visit the museum before or after you enjoy Inside Out!

About the Artists:

Hugo Cruz is a Cuban-born, award-winning, internationally renowned drummer who has performed in South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Mexico, Venezuela, and the United States. He is the leader of the group Caminos, which had its Pittsburgh debut at the Pittonkatonk festival in May 2019, where they performed rhythms of the African diaspora and Cuban music for thousands.

While a resident of Cuba, Hugo toured regularly with Síntesis, a leading Afrocuban rock-fusion group with traditional influences. He won the award as the “best drummer” at the “festival de tambor” at the Guillermo Barreto in Memoriam, Havana, Cuba. While performing with Síntesis, the group won a special award at Cubadisco in 2019, Cuba’s equivalent of the Grammys. Hugo has performed in Cuba’s largest jazz festival, Jazz Plaza, in Havana, Cuba, with acclaimed artists Dave Weckl and Victor Goines. He is a graduate of University of ISA (Instituto superior de artes) of Havana, Cuba, the leading arts university in the country. He has recorded with many of Cuba’s leading musicians, such as Sintesis, Aire de concierto, Adrian Berazain, Zule Guerra, Mayco de Alma, among others. In Pittsburgh, Hugo performs with several projects, including the Afro Yaqui Music Collective, and has been a guest teaching artist at the Afro American Music Institute and the University of Pittsburgh."

David Shoemaker (DJ Shoe) is an artist and educator from Pittsburgh. Known as DJ Shoe, his dynamic sound spans across genres, regions, and decades. With Hip Hop as a foundation, he creates dancefloors that center joy, movement, and community. Outside of nightlife, he teaches DJing skills and dance music history to the next generation of Pittsburgh DJs.

Inside Out is Carnegie Museum of Art’s new outdoor summer event series celebrating and supporting Pittsburgh’s rich cultural landscape.
