Religious Traditions in Italian Art
Thurs., Dec. 18
One of the most enduring and universal Christmas customs is the representation of the story of Christ’s birth in a Nativity scene, or presepio. Join David Wilkins, University of Pittsburgh art history professor emeritus, for a lecture exploring the Nativity in art, comparing and contrasting approaches to the theme. After lunch, join docents for a tour of Italian religious art, including the museum’s 18th-century Neapolitan presepio.
The Magnificent Piranesi
Wed., Jan. 14
Join Bernie Schultz, dean of the College of Creative Arts and professor of art history at West Virginia University, for a presentation on Piranesi’s talents and his legacy in the history of art and architecture. After lunch, examine the detailed works by Piranesi and his contemporaries in Giovanni Battista Piranesi: Architecture and the Spaces of the Imagination with Amanda Zehnder, assistant curator of fine arts.
Visit Giovanni Battista Piranesi: Architecture and the Spaces of the Imagination to learn more about the exhibition.
Museum Exhibitions: Preparation and Installation
Thurs., Feb. 19
Limited to 20 participants
What goes into the design, coordination, and preparation for exhibiting works of art in the museum? Begin with Christopher Rauhoff, director of exhibitions, and Heather Ernharth, exhibitions associate, for a guided walk-through of the permanent collection galleries, focusing on space, lighting, wall color, framing, and the protection of works of art. After lunch, go behind the scenes to the workshop to learn how an artwork travels from unpacking and preparation, including matting and framing, to exhibition display.
