Carnegie Museum of Art offers series of one-day and two-day summer workshops for teachers

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania…Teachers in all subject areas can develop creative interdisciplinary strategies with real classroom applications through guided gallery discussions and hands-on studio sessions at Carnegie Museum of Art this summer. Act 48 hours are earned for the one-day and two-day workshops. Registration and information is available at 412.622.3288.
           
One-Day Gallery Workshops

$25 members/$30 nonmembers (Discount for two classes: $44 members/$54 nonmembers)
Lunch in the Carnegie Café is included.

Making Sense of Contemporary Art, 19702000
July 17
What makes a work of art—art? This guided exploration of the museum’s contemporary art collection offers strategies for looking at and thinking about even the most challenging objects.

Writing the Artist’s Statement
August 14
Teachers will learn how to sharpen their students’ abilities to express critical and aesthetic responses to art through writing. They will practice crafting artists’ statements through a systematic analytical approach, and discover practical guidelines to inspire their students’ best thinking and writing in the art room and beyond.

Art and Interdisciplinary Learning
August 21
Taking advantage of the museum collection, participants will learn how to use art as the vehicle for interdisciplinary exploration and discovery through information, stimulating exercises, and proven models for making art a catalyst for academic learning.

Two-Day Gallery/Studio Workshops

Bring a bagged lunch.

Teachers will investigate the essential qualities of the clay medium and learn what makes a form unique. They will practice pinch, coil, and slab techniques in the studio and experiment with a variety of tools and methods to create surface interest.

Being There: Creating a Sense of Place through Drawing
Wed., July 18, 10 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
$65 members/$78 nonmembers, includes studio reception
Bring a bag lunch. 

Douglas Cooper, muralist and Andrew Mellon Professor at Carnegie Mellon’s School of Architecture, leads this daylong drawing excursion. The day starts in the museum’s Hall of Architecture with sketching projects focusing on light and shadow, volume, and effective use of detail. It progresses to the South Side where, weather permitting, participants will draw the city and its slopes. The day ends with a glass of wine at Cooper’s South Side studio.
