| 10/2 Evening Muse: Abstraction in Art and Music 6:00 PM Thurs., Oct. 2, 6:00–8:00 p.m. CMA Theater. What does it mean for a work of art or music to be “abstract”? Join the University of Pittsburgh’s Robert Bailey, PhD candidate in art history, and Elizabeth Hoover, PhD candidate in musicology, in an exploration of abstraction in the art and music of the 1920s through the 1950s. Following their lecture, enjoy a visit to Abstract Art before 1950: Watercolors, Drawings, Prints, and Photographs, accompanied by a live performance of abstract musical compositions. |

Delve into six fascinating works of fiction that tackle the complexities of the human condition—the humorous, the perilous, the ironic, and the fantastic. Each session begins with a 15-minute gallery talk highlighting literary and visual art connections. Then converse with fellow readers and library staff in the casual atmosphere of the Heinz Architectural Center. Books are available in the museum store, at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh Main Branch in Oakland, and at Life on Mars book clubs in your neighborhood library. | 10/11 Artist Lecture: Mark Bradford 4:00 PM Sat., Oct. 11, 4:00–5:00 p.m. Carnegie Lecture Hall; Free. Mark Bradford’s canvases incorporate the detritus and images of his Los Angeles neighborhood. Creating collages from foil, scraps of paper, and remnants of posters, he paints or sands away elements, giving the resulting works the character of map-like grids.
