Rights and Reproductions

Images from the collections of Carnegie Museum of Art are available for research and publication. Permission for use of Carnegie Museum of Art's images can be requested through the rights and reproductions section of our publications department.

To see a selection of photographs from the collection of Carnegie Museum of Art, visit the Historic Pittsburgh Image Collections at the University of Pittsburgh.

Ordering Procedure

How do I begin?
All requests for photographs and permissions must be submitted in writing to the Coordinator of Rights and Reproductions. You may either fill out the electronic order form or submit a letter to this office. Please describe the image you are requesting by name and artist, and the format in which you wish to receive the image: black-and-white print, slide, or color transparency. Slides may not be reproduced; they are for study purposes only. Digital images are currently available on a very limited basis.

In addition, please be specific about the purposes for which the image will be used: study, in book text, cover art for a publication, scholarly journal, etc. For publications, include the publisher's name and address, title and author, publication date, print run, languages, and distribution.

What happens next?
You will receive a form reflecting the cost for the photographic materials that you have requested and any applicable reproduction fees. This is your invoice and your contract with the museum. By signing and returning this form with payment, you indicate that you understand and agree to the terms of the contract and to the museum's general conditions for reproduction.

Prepayment is required. Checks should be in U.S. dollars and made payable to Carnegie Museum of Art. Upon receipt of payment and the signed contract, the Coordinator of Rights and Reproductions will send out the photographic materials with a letter of permission.

How long will it take for my order to be processed?
Orders are generally filled within two weeks after receipt of payment.

Are photographs of the entire collection available for purchase?
While a significant portion of the museum's collection has been photographed, there are times when images are not readily available. In these cases, you will be notified and given the option to request new photography. New photography generally takes between six and eight weeks to complete and prepayment is required. The museum reserves the right to cancel requests for new photography, but an appropriate explanation and full refund will be given.
